Rodrigo Toscano and Gillian Conoley: March 6, 2024

The Poetry Center presents Gillian Conoley and Rodrigo Toscano, reading from their work in San Francisco, at Medicine for Nightmares bookstore and galeria on 24th Street in the Mission. Conoley, who lives in Marin County just north of San Francisco, reads from her book Notes from the Passenger (Nightboat Books, 2023). Toscano, vistiting from New Orleans, Louisiana, reads from a new manuscript titled Whitman—Cannonball—Puebla. The drawings on the wall of the gallery are by Mission-based muralist Anthony Jimenez.

Rodrigo Toscano (00:41:01)

Rodrigo Toscano reads poems from each of the four sections ("Maioris Hispaniae," "Imperium," "Humanitas," and "Artificia Nationalis") of a new manuscript titled, Whitman—Cannonball—Puebla. The poems read include “Hemisphere Rumors,” “Caravals out of Cadíz,” “Caras y Máscaras,” “Ethnopolitical GPS,” “Chatty Cholula” and “Tláloc in Iceland,” among others. 

Gillian Conoley (00:19:51)

Gillian Conoley reads two long poems, “The Messenger” and “How It Is No Longer the Country That Was Divided” from her recently published Notes from the Passage, a book she describes as “concerned with the connection between the living and the dead.” The second poem she dedicates to her daughter. Conoley finishes with a new poem titled “Hungry Ghost,” which thinks through "complicity and combat,” and the life of her father, a World War II military hero turned anti-war activist.
