Lauren Shufran and r. erica doyle: September 5, 2013

The Poetry Center presents Lauren Shufran and r. erica doyle, reading and in conversation. Lauren Shufran reads from Inter Arma (Fence Books, 2013). r. erica doyle reads from proxy (belladonna* collaborative, 2013).Following the reading, Shufran and doyle engage in conversation with each other, and with the audience. Steve Dickison introduces the poets.

Lauren Shufran (00:22:49)

Lauren Shufran begins the event by reading the three epigraphs to their book: from Plato's Republic, from "They are all sodomites!" by Carla Frecerro, and from "Valley of the Shadowy Pigeons" by Jack Spicer. They then read from their book of poetry, Inter Arma: "Afterwards They Photographed My Veteran Face f/2 at 500," "Hazing Song," "I got my grill on," "Thicker Lube Means Lesser Friction," "I was a dude," "How I learned to stop worrying," "It's confusing when your forebears use the crescent moons," "Trompe L'oeille," "A penny on the puddles of some interest," and "Birds."

r. erica doyle (00:22:23)

r. erica doyle opens with an epigraph from David Berlinski's A Tour of the Calculus, then reads from proxy: "prologue," "palimpsest," "proxy," "phasedown" and "petroglyph."

Conversation (00:30:29)

Lauren Shufran and r. erica doyle take questions from the audience and discuss their creative process, queerness, taboos, writing of unspeakable subjects, their childhood and family background, their commitment to education, teaching poetry, making a living as a poet, the publication process of their first books, and poetic forms.
