Louise Glück and Kathleen Fraser: February 25, 1976
The Poetry Center presents Louise Glück and Kathleen Fraser, each reading their work then responding briefly to questions from the audience, in the César Chavez Student Union at San Francisco State University. Glück, shortly after publication of her second book, The House on Marshland (The Ecco Press, 1975), appears in her first ever reading on the West Coast of the US. In addition to poems from that book Glück reads, from manuscript, poems later to appear in her 1980 book Descending Figure. Fraser, who had recently stepped down as director of The Poetry Center, remaining on the faculty at SF State, reads from an array of new and earlier work, including what would be published as Magritte Series (Tuumba Press, 1977). The poets are introduced by Poetry Center director, and Fraser's successor as such, Lewis MacAdams.
Note: as marginalia, a pan of the full-house audience in the SF State Student Center appears at the end of the video.
