Philip Whalen — USA: Poetry, NET Outtakes: November 10, 1965

The Poetry Center presents Philip Whalen, reading and talking in regards to his poetics, and considering among other subjects the division between what is regarded as "eastern" and "western" writing and thought. Whalen responds to questions by filmmaker Richard O. Moore. The footage was recorded at Whalen's apartment in San Francisco, on November 10, 1965, late autumn following the summer of the Berkeley Poetry Conference at UC Berkeley, and that confluence on the West Coast of several of the poets profiled in the USA: Poetry series. 

The "Second Edition" NET Outtakes Series programs were made in 1978 by The Poetry Center's American Poetry Archives staff. Assembled from unused 16-millimeter black and white film footage shot during production of the original 15-minute USA: Poetry television programs (produced in 1965–66 for National Educational Television by Richard O. Moore of the film unit of KQED-TV, San Francisco), the outtakes footage is arranged here in the original shooting sequence. Note, some silent footage appears among the outtakes. Funding for The Poetry Center's NET Outtakes Series was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Philip Whalen reads "Since You Asked," "A Very Complicated Way of Saying Appearances Deceive," "March 1964 (a.k.a. "The Lost Poem")," "The Absolute Realty Company: Two Views" and "The Best of It." Speaking in response to Richard O. Moore, Whalen speaks to his own practice, poetics and literary background, his sense of his poet contemporaries and progenitors, his objection to the US war in Vietnam, his feeling regarding the unnatural division that gets inserted between practices of philosophy and poetry across the world, and his sense of east and west.

"I think that basically Western civilization has a kink in it that needs hammering out. The hammers come to me from India and China."
