Phoebe Giannisi and Brandon Brown: April 22, 2023

The Poetry Center, in collaboration with The Green Arcade, presents Spring 2023 Mazza Writer in Residence Phoebe Giannisi, Greek poet, architect, and author of eight books — in the US, Cicada (New Directions, 2022) and Homerica (World Poetry Books, 2018), both translated by Brian Sneeden — and Brandon Brown, poet and translator, reading mostly from both old and new uncollected work. Susan Gevirtz and Patrick Marks, respectively, introduce the poets, for this second of two public programs in Giannisi's weeklong Mazza Residency. She earlier shared her poetry and video/performance work and spoke with Eleni Stecopoulos, at The Poetry Center, and was guest artist in several cl assrooms at SF State. This event takes place at The Green Arcade, in San Francisco.

Brandon Brown (00:24:29)

Brandon Brown reads an early poem, “The Real Iliad,” and one of his translations from Occitan of troubador poet Raimbaut D’Aurenga, Poem 39, “Now I see the flowers gleam.” He then reads, from his book Lemonade, “Things I like,” and one poem from another book, "Brandon Browns.” He reads a poem dedicated to Peter Culley, “Love Come into the Light,” and also “My Mood,” “Anarchist Lake,” “Blue,” and “My Funeral.”

Phoebe Giannisi (00:25:10)

Phoebe Giannisi reads "Chimera," "gift, or patroklos I," and "Prelude (To the Tao Way): each spring I give the burial of myself again," in both Greek and English, from her book Homerica. She sings in Greek a quote from Plato’s Phaedrus, "Mortals Call him Winged Eros…" and reads "Birthday" and "You me" from Cicada. She then sings "When a Cicada Dies and Goes to Hades" and plays a recording of herself reciting a poem over a Greek rembetika folk song.
