New Voice Series, featuring Jennifer S. Cheng, Karla Myn Khine, Evelyn Jo, and music by Neblinas del Pacífico: May 9, 2024
The Poetry Center presents poets Jennifer S. Cheng, Karla Myn Khine, and Evelyn Jo, each reading their work. This is the fourth iteration of the New Voice Series, an annual reading series that pairs a poet alum of SF State, a current SF State graduate student in Creative Writing, and a current undergraduate student poet at SF State (any major). Jo, at the time an undergraduate at SF State, and Khine, in her last week as MFA graduate student, each read poems from manuscript. Cheng, as an alum of the SF State MFA program, reads from her books House A (Ominidawn, 2016) and Moon (Tarpaulin Sky, 2018), as well as new poems from manuscript. The poets are introduced by Tatihn Mellion and Thomas Ziemer, of the Poetry Center student staff.
For this closing event in the Poetry Center Reading Room for Spring 2024, we welcome Neblinas del Pacífico, whose members include MFA candidate in Creative Writing May-Li Khoe, and Federico Ardila, Professor of Mathematics at SF State, as well as Juliana Mejía, Erika Padilla, and Stephanie Reist. The collective banda brings it all together with a moving set of marimba de chonta music from the Afro-Colombian Pacific coast, including traditional and original songs.
