Brother Antoninus (a.k.a. William Everson) — USA: Poetry, NET Outtakes Series: January 25, 1966

The Poetry Center presents Brother Antoninus (a.k.a. Willilam Everson), at the time a "lay brother" in the Dominican Order, reading his poetry, speaking extemporariously, and engaging with his audience. He reads from A Canticle to the Waterbirds (subsequently published by Eizo in Berkeley, 1968) among other work. The footage was filmed on January 25, 1966 in the auditorium and its "green room" of the Dominican Monastery at St. Albert's College, Oakland, CA. 

The "Second Edition" NET Outtakes Series programs were made in 1978 by The Poetry Center's American Poetry Archives staff. Assembled from unused 16-millimeter black and white film footage shot during production of the original 15-minute USA: Poetry television programs (produced in 1965–66 for National Educational Television by Richard O. Moore of the film unit of KQED-TV, San Francisco), the outtakes footage is arranged here in the original shooting sequence. Note, some silent footage appears among the outtakes. Funding for The Poetry Center's NET Outtakes Series was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Brother Antoninus (a.k.a. Willilam Everson) (00:54:11)

Brother Antoninus (a.k.a. Willilam Everson) reads "A Canticle to the Waterbirds," "What Birds There Were," "The Way of Life and the Way of Death (Part I)," and "In All These Acts." During the reading, he soliliquizes on his habit of self-condemnation and the impersonality of humans in groups; he accuses his audience of being unreachable through love and incapable of loving, a speaks to the illusions and betrayals of love. Following the reading, in the auditorium's "green room," Antoninus is confronted by a woman friend who is distraught over having witnessed a seriously ill black child be refused admission to a hospital.
