Richard Wilbur — USA: Poetry, NET Outtakes Series: March 8, 1966

The Poetry Center presents Richard Wilbur, reading from and commenting on his poetry and work in translation and playwriting, in conversation with filmmaker and poet Richard O. Moore. In addition to his own poems, Wilbur reads his translations of Anna Akhmatova and François Villon. The footage, which includes considerable silent footage, was filmed March 8, 1966, at Wilbur's home in Portland, Connecticutt. Inserted slides in the program courtesy of Dietz/Hamlin Photographers.

The "Second Edition" NET Outtakes Series programs were made in 1978 by The Poetry Center's American Poetry Archives staff. Assembled from unused 16-millimeter black and white film footage shot during production of the original 15-minute USA: Poetry television programs (produced in 1965–66 for National Educational Television by Richard O. Moore of the film unit of KQED-TV, San Francisco), the outtakes footage is arranged here in the original shooting sequence. Note, some silent footage appears among the outtakes. Funding for The Poetry Center's NET Outtakes Series was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Richard Wilbur reads and talks about his translations of Anna Akhmatova's poem "Lot's Wife" (translated with Olga Carlisle) and of François Villon's "Ballad for the Ladies of Time Past," and his own poems: "Seed Leaves," "The Lilacs," ""The Proof," "Complaint," "Two Voices in a Meadow," "Advice to a Prophet," and "Shame." 

He talks about "schools" of American poetry and influences on his own work, of teaching poetry workshops and problems with writing while teaching, of his playwriting, and use of poetic meter among other subjects.
