Kenneth Koch — USA: Poetry, NET Outtakes Series: March 2 & 3, 1966

The Poetry Center presents Kenneth Koch, speaking of his life and work, in response to questions from poet-filmmaker Richard O. Moore, and reading from his poetry and the opening from his novel The Red Robins. The footage was filmed at Koch's apartment (with his daughter Katherine appearing) in New York City, March 2 and 3, 1966, and briefly at The Jewish Museum, with John Ashbery and others, for an opening of work by Max Ernst on March 2, 1966. 

This "Second Edition" NET Outtakes Series program (per a credit line in the video) appears to have been made in 1975 by The Poetry Center's American Poetry Archives staff (with the remainder of the outtakes programs being dated 1978). Assembled from unused 16-millimeter black and white film footage shot during production of the original 15-minute USA: Poetry television programs (produced in 1965–66 for National Educational Television by Richard O. Moore of the film unit of KQED-TV, San Francisco), the outtakes footage is arranged here in the original shooting sequence. Note, some silent footage appears among the outtakes. Funding for The Poetry Center's NET Outtakes Series was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Kenneth Koch responds to questions from Richard O. Moore and reads his poems "When The Sun Tries To Go On," "Ma Provence," "Spring," "The Seine," the opening of his novel The Red Robins, and parts of "The Circus" and "Ko." He speaks of the poets of the New York School and the influence of French poetry on his writing, and attends the opening of a Max Ernst exhibition with John Ashbery and others.
