Frank O'Hara — USA: Poetry, NET Outtakes Series: March 5, 1966

The Poetry Center presents Frank O'Hara, reading from his poetry and talking on his work with filmmaker/poet Richard O. Moore, and talking about painters, playwrights and poets, and collaborating on a filmscript, with artist Al Leslie. The footage was filmed March 5, 1966, in O'Hara's apartment at 791 Broadway, briefly on the street in Manhattan, and in Leslie's studio at 92 Broadway, in New York City. With the 15-minute USA: Poetry television program, this is among the only moving-image documentation of O'Hara, who was killed in an accident in July the same year.

The "Second Edition" NET Outtakes Series programs were made in 1978 by The Poetry Center's American Poetry Archives staff. Assembled from unused 16-millimeter black and white film footage shot during production of the original 15-minute USA: Poetry television programs (produced in 1965–66 for National Educational Television by Richard O. Moore of the film unit of KQED-TV, San Francisco), the outtakes footage is arranged here in the original shooting sequence. Note, some silent footage appears among the outtakes. Funding for The Poetry Center's NET Outtakes Series was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Frank O'Hara, with artist Al Leslie, talk with one another and in response to questions from Richard O. Moore. O'Hara and Leslie collaborate on a filmscript for Philosophy in the Bedroom (the notes for which were later destroyed by a fire at Leslie’s studio), with O'Hara at the typewriter, and O'Hara reads his poems: "Liebeslied," "An Airplane Whistle (After Heine)," "Ave Maria" (beginning “Mothers of America, let your kids go to the movies...”), "Answer to Voznesensky and Yevtushenko," and "For the Chinese New Year & For Bill Berkson."
