Louis Ginsberg and Allen Ginsberg: May 9, 1974

The Poetry Center presents Louis Ginsberg and Allen Ginsberg, each reading their poems for this father-and-son feature at San Francisco State. Louis Ginsberg reads from Morning in Spring (William Morrow and Co., 1970), which was his third published book of poetry. Allen Ginsberg reads a span of new work, most addressing contemporary topics, friends, and teachers. The poets alternate, with a long set by Louis, a long set by Allen, a short two-poem set by Louis, then Allen closing out the program. The venue is McKenna Auditorium, in the Creative Arts Building at San Francisco State. The poets appear on this recording without introduction.

Allen Ginsberg, after opening with Buddhist chanting, reads a long set of poems, among them "Stay Away from The White House Blues," "Teton Village/Breath Trungpa Poem," "To Pablo Neruda," and "The Great Father," before inviting his father Louis Ginsberg back on stage.

Allen Ginsberg, returning to the stage at McKenna Auditorium, opens his second set of poems with "What would you do if you lost it?" before asking people to hang around afterward in the Gallery Lounge.
