James Welch and Dennis Schmitz: April 18, 1974
The Poetry Center presents James Welch and Dennis Schmitz, each presenting their poetry at San Francisco State University. Schmitz reads from work that would appear in his book Goodwill, Inc. (Ecco Press, 1975), among other work. Welch reads new poems and poems from his debut book, Riding the Earthboy 40, the first edition of which (World Publishing Co., 1971), as noted in the introduction here, was pulped by the publisher; subsequent editions have appeared over the past 50 years. He also reads a section from his debut novel, Winter in the Blood (Harper & Row, 1974; many years later the novel was made into a film produced by Sherman Alexie). Kathleen Fraser makes the introductions.
Note: the recording ends abruptly, as James Welch is preparing to read a final poem.
