Gary Snyder, Balasaraswati Music and Dance School Benefit: February 13, 1976

The Poetry Center presents Gary Snyder, reading his poetry and sharing the stage dancers and musicians in a benefit for the Balasaraswati Music and Dance School. "To Ganesha, the Elephant-headed," a dance by Masa Snyder, opens the proceedings, after which Snyder comments on Tanjore Balasaraswati and the tradition within which her Bharatanatyam style of South Indian dance and teaching practices arose. For convenience, the audio tracks here are split to represent the two halves of the performance separated by an intermission (continuous on video). The program is at King Junior High in Berkeley, California.

Following an opening dance "To Ganesha, the Elephant-headed" by Masa Snyder, Gary Snyder reads his poems: "Bubbs Creek Haircut," "It," "7 August, 7 July, 77," "Through the Smoke-hole," "Early morning, still dark...," "Acama Desert," "The White Mouth," "Song of the Taste," "Regarding Wave," and "Wave." He comments as well on Balasarawati and the Music and Dance School and its traditions.
