Jackson Mac Low and Steve Benson: March 10, 1983

The Poetry Center presents Jackson Mac Low and Steve Benson, in collaborative performance. The program, as the second part of a two-part residency by Mac Low, incorporates recorded sounds, piano, harmonica, recorders, and percussion instruments. Mac Low then presents an extended set of his performance works and poems. The program takes place at Valencia Rose Cafe, in San Francisco's Mission district. Jim Hartz, Poetry Center director, makes the introductons, after noting a forthcoming panel on politics and writing involving Benson together with Bruce Boone, Judy Grahn, and Bill Berkson, to take place at Intersection for the Arts.

Jackson Mac Low and Steve Benson present an improvised collaborative performance, drawing on multiple texts by both writers — Benson's piece "Danger" plus works by Mac Low — along with performance instructions, and incorporating recorded sounds and musical instruments.

Jackson Mac Low, after rewinding a recorded tape-reel and explaining the provenance of the recording, presents a set of his lexical performance works and his poems. These include: "1st Milarepa Gatha," " Dormant Expects," "We Never Could Have Won," "Recommend," "Giant Otters," "Hereford Bosons 1–7," "Ten Weeks," "A Lack of Balance But Not Fatal," "For John Cage, Right After His 70th Birthday 1–11," "Almost Not a Hooker," "Sequence," "Rational Renga Link," "2nd Happy Birthday, Anne, Vocabulary Gatha," "Sugar Blues," and "Radio Turnbuckle."
