Alta and Jack Collom: October 10, 1976
The Poetry Center presents Alta and Jack Collom, reading from their poetry in the San Francisco State University Student Center. Alta, living in the East Bay, reads her own work from No Visible Means of Support (Shameless Hussy, 1971) and i am not a practicing angel (Crossing Press, 1975), among other works, as well as a poem from Mitsuye Yamada's Camp Notes and Other Poems (1976) and a section from Ntozake Shange's for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf (1976), for both of which landmark books her Shameless Hussy Press was the first publisher, a poem by Susan Griffin (also published by Shameless Hussy), and her translation from German of a poem by Hermann Hesse. Collom, visiting from Grand Island, Nebraska, reads a selection of poems, including his translation from Middle High German of Walter von der Vogelweide's "Under der linden...," and poems in manuscript from the sequence Exchanges of Earth & Sky (published many years later by Fish Drum, 2005). Lewis MacAdams makes the introductions, after noting Donald Hall and Tom Clark ("two enormous baseball fans") will read the following week at the same location.
