“Tin Tan” Magazine Reading — Alma Luz Villanueva, Wilfredo Castaño, Alejandro Murguía: October 25, 1978
The Poetry Center presesnts a reading in celebration of Tin Tan magazine, featuring readings by contributing poets Alma Luz Villanueva and Wildfredo Castaño, and founding editor of the San Francisco Mission District-based Tin Tan, Alejandro Murguía. Villanueva reads poems from her first book, Bloodroot (Place of Herons, Austin, 1977) and other work. Castaño reads a span of his poems, some of which would appear in Small Stones Cast Upon the Tender Earth (Second Coming Press, 1981). Murguía, whose early work had appeared in the landmark anthology Time to Greez! Incantations from the Third World (Glide Publications/Third World Communications, 1975), reads from Nicaraguan poet-priest Ernesto Cardenal's Epigramas (originally published in 1947) and from his own poetry. Tom Mandel, in his brief term as Poetry Center director, announces forthcoming events, introduces the poets, and shows recent copies of Tin Tan at the conclusion of the reading, in the César Chavez Student Center at San Francisco State University.
Note: at the conclusion of the event, the camera (minus audio recording) settles on a static shot for several minutes, retained here, with Villanueva across the room seated in the frame.
