The Poetry Center presents Anthony Cody and Chaun Webster, in conjunction with the Howard Zinn Book Fair, held at City College San Francisco, Mission Center, on Valencia Street. The thematic for the 2023 Howard Zinn Book Fair is "Against Amnesia," which the poets take up in the delivery of their work, continuing into a conversation in response to questions and comments from the audience (poets Oscar Bermeo, Barbara Jane Reyes, and Raquel Roque Salas Rivera among them). Cody reads from his books Borderland Apocrypha (Omnidawn, 2020) and The Rendering (Omnidawn, 2023), and Webster from Wail Song (subtitled Wading in the Water at the End of the World, Black Ocean, 2023). As noted, the event takes places at 10:00 am, as one of multiple opening events for the day-long annual book fair. Steve Dickison introduces the poets.

The Poetry Center and Bird & Beckett Books & Records co-present musicians David Boyce (tenor saxophone), Hafez Modirzadeh (soprano saxophone), and Marshall Trammell (drums and percussion) in performance at Bird & Beckett Books & Records, San Francisco. The event, titled "Arcana Boil," also features poets Linda Norton, Brian Lucas, and Rod Roland, with Nicholas Whittington and Steve Dickison reading works by the late David Meltzer, as a celebration of the "Shuffle Boil" special edition of Whittington's magazine Amerarcana, guest-edited by Meltzer and Dickison. Each of the musicians and poets were contributors to the magazine. During March 2017, all Poetry Center programs were dedicated to the theme "Because We Come from Everything: Poetry and Migration," shared with 30+ organizations across the US engaged in the Poetry Coalition.

The Poetry Center presents David Henderson reading a retrospective selection of poems, from his earliest published works to the present, and in conversation with the audience. Henderson reads from Felix of the Silent Forest (Poets Press, 1967), De Mayor of Harlem (E.P. Dutton, 1970), The Low East (North Atlantic Books, 1980), Neo California (North Atlantic Books, 1998), and newer work from manuscript, including a work-in-progress “For Gil Scott-Heron.” His reading is followed by a conversation with the audience.

The Poetry Center presents Linda Norton and Fanny Howe, along with emcee Norma Cole. Norton reads from Wite Out: Love and Work (Hanging Loose Press, 2020) and from unpublished work. Howe reads from Love and I: Poems (Graywolf Press, 2019) and from Second Childhood (Graywolf Press, 2014). Norton and Howe then, with Cole, engage in questions and discussion, talking about their various writing processes and their affinities, among other subjects. This program was supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Poetry Center and The Green Arcade present Fred Moten and Nathaniel Mackey reading their poetry, along with Hafez Modirzadeh on alto saxophone, at the 3rd Floor, McRoskey Mattress Co., in San Francisco. Fred Moten reads from The Service Porch (Letter Machine Editions, 2016); Hafez Modirzadeh offers a brief solo performance; Nathaniel Mackey reads from Blue Fasa (New Directions, 2015), Whatsaid Serif (City Lights Books, 2001), and from manuscript. The evening culminates with Mackey and Moten performing their works in tandem.

The Poetry Center and the SFSU Labor Archives and Research Center co-present "Working with Others: Convivial Research (Revisited)," a panel with Manuel (Manolo) Callahan, Stefano Harney, and Tonika Sealy Thompson, moderated by Steve Dickison, at the third annual Howard Zinn Book Fair, at City College of San Francisco, Mission Campus. After an introduction by their friend and comrade Manolo Callahan, of the Center for Convivial Research and Autonomy, Stefano Harney and Fred Moten deliver the second of four linked Bay Area lectures, under the collective title "Felicity Street." The present lecture is titled "Involvement and Betrayal" (On Andaiye, Martin Carter, Guyana and what Michelle Cliff calls "the centerless, outward edgelessness of the Caribbean"). Throughout their talk, Harney and Moten respond to questions and comments from the audience. The program was co-presented by The Poetry Center and The Green Arcade, with thanks to our host, the McRoskey Mattress Company, and to the Bagley Wright Lecture Series on Poetry, for their initiation and support of this series of lectures.

The Poetry Center presents The Black Aesthetic, including curatorial members Jamal Batts, Ryanaustin Dennis, and Leila Weefur, together with contributors Shah Noor Hussein, Christian Johnson, and Ismail Muhammad, each reading and in conversation. After an introduction to the project, the writers each read their contributions to The Black Aesthetic Season II (Wolfman Books, 2018). The readings are followed by a conversation with the audience.
