The Poetry Center and Bird & Beckett Books & Records co-present musicians David Boyce (tenor saxophone), Hafez Modirzadeh (soprano saxophone), and Marshall Trammell (drums and percussion) in performance at Bird & Beckett Books & Records, San Francisco. The event, titled "Arcana Boil," also features poets Linda Norton, Brian Lucas, and Rod Roland, with Nicholas Whittington and Steve Dickison reading works by the late David Meltzer, as a celebration of the "Shuffle Boil" special edition of Whittington's magazine Amerarcana, guest-edited by Meltzer and Dickison. Each of the musicians and poets were contributors to the magazine. During March 2017, all Poetry Center programs were dedicated to the theme "Because We Come from Everything: Poetry and Migration," shared with 30+ organizations across the US engaged in the Poetry Coalition.
The Poetry Center and The Green Arcade present Fred Moten and Nathaniel Mackey reading their poetry, along with Hafez Modirzadeh on alto saxophone, at the 3rd Floor, McRoskey Mattress Co., in San Francisco. Fred Moten reads from The Service Porch (Letter Machine Editions, 2016); Hafez Modirzadeh offers a brief solo performance; Nathaniel Mackey reads from Blue Fasa (New Directions, 2015), Whatsaid Serif (City Lights Books, 2001), and from manuscript. The evening culminates with Mackey and Moten performing their works in tandem.
The Poetry Center, in collaboration with giovanni singleton and Nocturnes Review, presents Jayne Cortez and LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs. Each poet reads briefly from their work and then engages in a conversation, moderated by singleton. The event, in tandem with an unrecorded performance the prior night at The Victoria Theatre, in San Francisco, by Jayne Cortez and The Firespitters (Denardo Coleman, Al McDowell, Bern Nix), with LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs and Matana Roberts opening, took place at the César Chavez Student Center on the SF State campus as part of a multi-program project funded in part by the San Francisco Arts Commission Cultural Equity Initiatives grant program.
