KRON-TV Newswatch footage from August 4th 1970 with Phil Wilson featuring a report on the making, screening and censorship of pornographic movies in San Francisco, foucssing on O'Farrell Theatre owners the Mitchell Brothers. Includes exterior views of downtown adult movie theaters and of a film production set at the O'Farrell Theatre. Filmmaker Artie Mitchell discusses censorship on his film set and states: "It's their role ... to stop change, to resist change. Just like, you know, change being such an explosive force." There is also an interview with a lawyer ("Mr. Zwerin"), who points out the Board of Supervisors recently tried to close down the O'Farrell Theatre by suggesting that: "They might be using an inflammable film [nitrate film] in the motion picture," posing a potential fire hazard. KRON-TV News footage from June 6th 1973 featuring brief scenes from a press conference by actress Marilyn Chambers (1952-2009), who is responding to local criticism in Hayward of her film Behind the Green Door, produced in San Francisco by Artie and Jim Mitchell. She states: "I have a 1st Amendment right to my freedom of expression. My acting is very important to me … My film has never been found to be obscene by any court in the United States or anywhere else in the world. We just recently showed it at Cannes." KPIX-TV Eyewitness news footage from June 6th 1973 featuring brief scenes from a press conference by actress Marilyn Chambers (1952-2009), who is responding to local censorship in Hayward of her film Behind the Green Door, produced in San Francisco by Artie and Jim Mitchell. She states: "The Chief of police or it's officers or the District Attorney in Hayward are not the judges of my work. Why don't they want Behind the Green Door shown? Are they afraid of honesty in sexual matters? Would that destroy their community?" She goes onto declare that: "It is time for Hayward to join the Twentieth Century and hope that my film Behind the Green Door will help it do so." Surprised patrons are shown answering questions (with the movie still running) and covering their faces up. Ends with scenes of a police officer explaining that patrons will be charged under Section 220 of the municipal police code and theater owners under Section 311.2 of the penal code (which are all misdemeanors).
