César Chávez Special

About This Item

KQED News special featuring an in-depth studio interview with César Chávez, from October 12th 1972. Includes scenes of Chávez explaining his personal history and philosophy, describing the inception and early development of the United Farm Workers (UFW) union and outlining the movement's aims and goals. He explains that: "I had a dream that … what made them [the growers] truly powerful was that we [the farm workers] were weak. And if we could somehow begin to develop some strength among ourselves ... I felt somehow we could begin … balancing that power in agriculture." He also reflects on how: "We're up against an employer community, with the growers, that is living at least 100 years behind the times." Ends with brief views of a UFW meeting and picketing.
