I remember with crystal-clear clarity when the New York Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958, and player Willie Mays was denied a mortgage on a property that he wanted to buy in the city in 1959. My parents experienced the same sort of thing in the spring of 1957, when they wanted to buy a house in the Los Altos/Los Altos Hills area, some 40 miles south of San Francisco. They had to resort to using a Caucasian friend who posed as a buyer in order to do so.
