Monte Cristo Sailing Boat Feature

About This Item

KPIX Eyewitness News report from October 8th 1969 by Dave Monsees at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, featuring the old 3-masted sailing boat Monte Cristo, owned by Ron C. Craig. Includes scenes of Captain Tom Gilchrist being interviewed and views of the Monte Cristo sailing under Golden Gate Bridge. It it worth noting that this is the boat from which American Indian activists jumped overboard, as it was circling Alcatraz on November 9th 1969, to claim the island by right of discovery. These were: Richard Oakes; Jim Vaughn; Joe Bill; Ross Haden and Jerry Hatch. This incident was the beginning of the occupation of Alcatraz Island by American Indians, which lasted from 1969-71.

I was a member of the crew when Monte Cristo was in San Francisco. The person being interviewed is Captain Tom Gilchrist not Ron Craig. Ron Craig was the owner.

I just found this video and it brings a tear to my eye. This is my fathers ship that was later called the Endeavour 11 which did the re enactment of Captain Cooks discovery of Austrailia at Botany Bay in 1970. Wow Can,t believe it.Just wonderful to see this. Please send me a copy if possible and if you have more I would love to see them. I have tons of clippings photos and have the original crest that was on board after the ship sank in New Zealand.

Ronald Craig Jr.
