About This Item
KPIX Eyewitness News report from October 8th 1969 by Dave Monsees at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, featuring the old 3-masted sailing boat Monte Cristo, owned by Ron C. Craig. Includes scenes of Captain Tom Gilchrist being interviewed and views of the Monte Cristo sailing under Golden Gate Bridge. It it worth noting that this is the boat from which American Indian activists jumped overboard, as it was circling Alcatraz on November 9th 1969, to claim the island by right of discovery. These were: Richard Oakes; Jim Vaughn; Joe Bill; Ross Haden and Jerry Hatch. This incident was the beginning of the occupation of Alcatraz Island by American Indians, which lasted from 1969-71.
