Students Picket Judo Karate Club at UC Berkeley

About This Item

KPIX Eyewitness News report from January 8th 1970 at UC Berkeley, featuring a protest by women students who want co-ed self defense classes. One student explains to reporters after they've been ordered to leave (or be arrested) that: "If anyone tries to throw us out of here, we're gonna wind up suing the university for denying us our rights as human beings because they're violating laws." Also includes scenes of women crowding around men trying to pass them to get into the Judo Karate Club, shouting "Scab students!" and of a meeting between students and university administration, to discuss the issues involved. Includes views of the women chanting "Self defense for women, now!" See KQED's 'Women's rights demonstration at UC Berkeley' report (KQN 572), which covers the same events and is also streaming in DIVA. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
