Marincello Hearing
About This Item
KPIX Eyewitness news report from September 15th 1970 by Mike Lee in Marin County, featuring a public held hearing by the Gulf Oil Company, to assess reactions to their Marincello peperty development proposals. Marincello was a 2100 acre parcel of land on the Marin Headlands. Includes scenes of Gulf Oil Executive VP Glenn Saunders confirming that nothing has been decided yet and attorney William M. Bennett (1918-2010) arguing against any development on this location: "Do you know that those Golden Gate headlands are featured in a book by the Sierra Club as one of the wonders of the world ... They are for this generation, the next generation ... of the entire world. There's only one view like that. And you should knock off this nonsense at once." Also features views of people at the hearing and of the headlands. See KPIX report Reference No. 110403 from 12/2/72, which shows how this parcel of land was eventually purchased by the Nature Conservancy group, held in public trust and then passed on to become part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
