A Day at the Point Reyes Light Newspaper (1979)

About This Item

KRON-TV rough-cut footage produced in April 1979 for an Assignment Four program titled 'Small Town Newspaper', featuring scenes from the Point Reyes Light newspaper offices in Point Reyes Station, CA. The Light has just earned the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for reporting on a cult, Synanon, which had a major presence in the area and as a result is receiving much press attention. Includes interviews with co-publishers David and Catherine Mitchell; views of their news team working in the office to meet a print deadline; interviews with townsfolk for their reaction to a local paper winning a Pulitzer prize; exterior shots on the street outside the building and to-camera takes by reporters Rob Robin and Phil Wilson. The Light office staff seen include: Gayanne Lathrop (front office manager); Gayle Barlow (typesetter); John Madden (reporter) and Teresa Marks (ads paste up).  The townsfolk interviewed include: Jo Myer (ex newspaper employee); Carlo Rocca (grocer) and Larry Sorensen (sheriff's deputy). Many thanks to Dave Mitchell for positively identifying many of the people seen on camera, in February 2016! Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.

This 16mm reversal film print was re-scanned in 4K (4096 x 2970) using a Lasergraphics ScanStation film scanner, in January 2023.
