Youth For Service in Hunters Point (1960)

KRON-TV footage shot in the summer of 1960 at a meeting of the Youth For Service organization, run by Orville Luster in San Francisco. The MC asks for reports from everyone about any challenges they are facing whilst working in the community and calls a representative of the Savoys Club - "Pooch" - to let them know "How's Hunters Point coming out?" Pooch explains that: "It's a different trouble over there I mean, between different clubs over there and everything, wanna fight our club the Savoys. We try to avoid it but if trouble come, we not gonna run from it ... So they been coming over there quite regular, club by club you know, trying us out." Also includes scenes from an interview with SFPD Captain (and Head of the Juvenile Bureau) William A. Hanrahan who expresses both support for and reservations about Youth For Service, which operates under Rosenberg and Ford Foundation grants. He goes onto state his firm belief that SFPD can't do anything more to reduce "juvenile delinquency" in the city. Ends with another Youth For Service rerport from Pooch, who describes progress on a building project and silent views of youths attending this meeting. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
