Portrait of a man betraying friends and colleagues to save himself.  Under tremendous pressure on many fronts, afraid the court would deprive him of his children, unable to find work, threatened with jail, and urged by his psychoanalyst (an FBI informant) to appear as a "friendly witness", Hayden ultimately betrayed himself.  His career recovered.  But he didn't.  He spoke and wrote candidly of his shame and regret over this action and was in some respects a broken man for the rest of his life.  This is what the phony patriotism industry does to real people.
