A visit to the Martin Luther King School (1968)

KTVU news footage from June 6th 1968 featuring a report by Carlton Cordell on the Martin Luther King School in San Francisco. Teacher Welvin Stroud is introduced as having been recently let go by the John Muir School. When interviewed Stroud states his belief that the hiring practices of San Francisco School District are illegal and confirms his intention to bring a law suit against them. A student is shown using his James Brown Reader, which is used to help teach literacy instead of more conventional textbooks. Also includes views of artwork on the walls, students playing outside and staring at the camera inside. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.

Note that Dr. Maya Angelou visited the Martin Luther King School in 1968, interviewing staff and watching students learn. That clip can also be viewed in DIVA.
