About This Item
KPIX News footage from September 23rd 1958 featuring an interview with Margherite Wendell Chapman (1926-2010) and Willie Mays by Fort Pearson at their home in San Francisco's Sherwood Forest neighborhood. Pearson's first question to Wendell Chapman is: "Well then what about all this gossip column rumors that you and your husband aren't getting along? Is there any truth to it?" She replies there is not. He continues: "Mrs. Mays it's rumored that you're not as happy in San Francisco as we are happy to have you here. What's the trouble?" She denies this and says they are the victims of "malicious gossip." Pearson then reminds her that they had issues with purchasing their current home in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood and asks if they've been happy since moving in. She confirms they are content and explains: "I think everybody in San Francisco is our friend. But this one person whom I wouldn't dignify to call his name because he at one time was a mental patient and I think the man is crazy. And he started all these rumors and of course we just ignore him. But he's what's known as a telephone freak." Pearson goes on to congratulate Willie Mays on his batting average for the season.
