Interview with Rev. Ray Broshears

KPIX News footage from July 6th 1973 with Mike Lee featuring brief scenes from an interview at the Helping Hands Community Center in San Francisco with Rev. Ray Broshears. Seen holding a large shotgun, Broshears states: "We don't want guns. We don't want mace. We don't want the billy club ... we don't want these things. But by God, do you want to be beaten Mike?" Broshears was attacked and beaten unconscious on July 4th by a group of "young toughs" who were lighting fireworks outside the Community Center. In response, Broshears annnounced the formation of the "Lavender Panthers", an armed group who would patrol Polk Street and South of Market, with the intention of defending members of the gay community against attack. Also includes views of the neighborhood and an interview with some youths on the street, one of whom says: "We don't even bother them. We just stay on our side of the street and they stay on theirs."
