Willie Brown Show: Governor Wilson

One on One with Governor Pete Wilson, seeking reelection, and Willie L. Brown, Jr. Brown and Wilson debate the Three-strikes law (California, 1994), which significantly increases prison sentences for repeat offenders. Wilson argues California sentencing laws are far too lenient, citing the Melvin Carter serial rapist case, in which Carter served only half his sentence after pleading guilty to raping over 100 women. Brown states he is against Three Strikes, arguing “I’m against the ‘Three Strikes’ idea. That’s two too many.” Other topics discussed include immigration and social services, including the cost of emergency healthcare, education, and incarceration of illegal immigrants; border control; and term limits for public officials.
