Highlights of the California Education Summit

About This Item

Highlights from the California Education Summit held February 15-16, 1994 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, CA. The reoccurring message of the California Economic Summit in 1993 was that California could not have a sound economy without an educated and well-prepared workforce. Speaker Willie L. Brown, Jr. organized the California Education Summit with the intention of turning attention to public education by examining the challenges facing the California education system and producing an agenda. Challenges and issues include: low test results in California schools; young adults entering the workforce without being adequately prepared to perform "ordinary" tasks; the rate of students not graduating from high school; lack of classroom space to accommodate the growing population; the small California budget per classroom; and the violence in communities in which children live.
