About This Item

Footage of the California Education Summit held February 15-16, 1994 in San Francisco, California. Presenter Sam Ginn, Chairman of California Business Roundtable, discusses preparing children for working in "today's high-tech economy." He presents a report published by the California Business Roundtable titled, "Mobilizing for the Competitiveness," which outlines the skills required to be successful in the current economy. Dr. Charles Schultze discusses the connection between economic progress and education, presenting data on the startling trend of the slowdown of productivity, blaming the education system for failing to upgrade the skills and competencies of non-college high school graduates to meet the demands of a modern economy, and for failing to handle the school to work transition for the high school graduate. Dr. Gerald C. Hayward, National Center for Research in Vocational Education, discusses the importance of removing barriers between vocational and academic education. Dr. Frank Newman, Executive Director of the Education Commission of the State, provides his suggestions on how the educational system must be reformed and restructured to meet the demands of the modern workforce.
