She discusses some of the challenges facing students, including limited English proficiency, physical or mental disabilities, impoverished homes, and standardized testing. Presenter LaVoneia Canada Steele, Superintendent of Berkeley Unified School District, shares the reasons for Berkeley's reputation for excellence. Senator Gary Hart discusses the strengths and weaknesses of California education, and the need for reform. Assemblywoman Delaine Eastin discusses the importance of involving parents in a child's education, recruiting and training good teachers, and giving power back to teachers and school administrators where decisions should be made. D. A. "Del" Weber, President of the California Teachers Association, presents the document, "Rediscovering Education: Creating Schools for the 20th Century."
