Multiple Murders in Santa Cruz County

About This Item

KPIX news footage from February 20th 1973 with reporter Pat O'Brien, who provides updates on the multiple murders and discovery of yet more bodies in the Santa Cruz area and elsewhere. Herbert Mullin is being charged with some of these killings but there are also a number of dead, mutilated college co-eds who are being found, including most recently the decapitated remains of Alice Liu and Rosalind Thorpe off Eden Canyon Road, east of Castro Valley. These two women were in fact murdered by serial killer Edmund Kemper, who will only complete his cycle of murders and confess to authorities in April. Santa Cruz district attorney Peter Chang is asked to comment on the recent "onslaught of murder in his county" and responds by reflecting on the community's "way of life" itself: how it appears to be changing radically and is perhaps under threat. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
