Shoot out at Sunset Liquor Store
About This Item
KPIX-TV news footage from April 24th 1971 with reporter Mike Lee featuring an armed robbery and shoot out with police at a liquor store in the Sunset District on April 23rd. The San Francisco police Captain of Inspectors Mortimer McInerney provides their description of the incident, alleging that Dennis Calderon and two members of Los Siete (Gary "Pinky" Lescallett and Danilo "Bebe" Melendez were involved. Also includes interviews at the home of Alice Metzger ("who was active in the Los Siete movement") with lawyer Phil Ryan (1939-2018) and Los Siete organizer Al Martinet, who are claiming this is "police harassment." Ryan states: "We certainly have ample evidence of the perjurious behavior of police officers with respect to Los Siete." When Lee presses them on whether they accept the "apparent reality" that there was an armed robbery at a liquor store on the 22nd block of Taraval, Ryan retorts: "I think that apparent reality is like many apparent realities when you're dealing with law enforcement. There were certain apparent realities in May of 1969 with respect to the Brodnik death. Those apparent realities became myths." Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
