Earthquake Predictions By Iben Browning (1990)

About This Item

A KPIX-TV special interest report from 1990 featuring the controversy surrounding a prediction by Iben Browning (1918-1991) that both the Hayward Fault and the New Madrid Fault (in Missouri) will cause earthquakes on December 2nd and December 3rd 1990. With the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake fresh in the minds of Bay Area residents, this prediction provokes additional concern as scientists agree that an earthquake on the Hayward Fault would cause much greater damage and loss of life than the 1989 disaster. Geologist Doug Seeger is interviewed, who believes- like most scientists - that it's actually impossible to pinpoint the exact date of an earthquake. Also includes scenes from the Loma Prieta earthquake, an interview with Browning's daughter Evelyn Browning and views of grade school students in New Madrid, MO practicing a duck and cover routine in their classroom. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
