Guided Tours Of Alcatraz Island - First Day (KPIX-TV)
About This Item
KPIX-TV news footage from October 26th 1973 with reporter Al Dale featuring scenes of people catching the new ferry service for a guided tour of Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz was officially dedicated as National Park property yesterday and this is the first time public access has been granted to the island since it was ceded from Mexico in 1848, as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Includes views of passengers on the ferry as they approach Alcatraz, being shown around the island and one man is also interviewed about his experience. Dale points out that although the government is fixing up the island, they will be leaving the examples of graffiti made by the American Indians who occupied Alcatraz from November 1969 to June 1971: "Because it's part of the history here."
