American Indians Arrested & Taken Off Alcatraz Island

KRON-TV news footage from June 11th 1971, where 15 American Indian activists have just been removed from Alcatraz island by 20 U.S. Marshalls armed with rifles and shotguns. Alcatraz had been occupied by American Indians since November 1969 and many of them were on the mainland (on a supply run) when this intervention happened. All American Indians were refused access to go back to Alcatraz and those arrested were first taken to the naval base on Yuerba Buena Island, before being dropped off in San Francisco at the Senator Hotel. Includes views of Alcatraz, a press conference held by Federal representatives (including the U.S. Attorney for Northern District of California James L. Browning, Jr.), a press conference by John Trudell (1946-2015) of the Santee Sioux at Pier 40 on the waterfront and interviews with the American Indians, who describe first hand accounts of their arrest. Delbert Lee of the Sioux nation says: "I was really certainly surprised beause I never expected this to happen so swiftly." Oohosis of the Cree nation exclaims: "We're gonna go back there man, we're gonna go back there and we're gonna hold that island!"
