Save the Fox Theatre (San Francisco)

KPIX-TV news report from April 1961 featuring scenes from the Fox Theatre at 1350 Market Street in San Francisco, where concerned patrons are trying to save this cinema from closure. Includes brief, silent views of dancers dressed in vantage "flapper" clothing dancing a Charleston down the grand staircase and holding cards which read" "Save The Fox Theatre San Francisco." Also an interview with a man who talks about trying to put this issue on the November ballot, to prevent the theatre closing because of a recent decline in attendance and box office receipts. Note that this issue did make it onto the ballot on November 7th 1961 as Proposition 1 and was defeated by a "no" vote of 59%. The theater - originally opened on June 28th 1929 - closed on February 16th 1963, demolition started in March of that year and the Fox Plaza hi-rise building is now at that location.
