KPIX-TV news footage from June 19th 1961 featuring brief, silent views of contestants practicing for the first ever Northern California Miss Bronze beauty contest, at San Francisco Playland at the Beach's Surf Club. Organized by Belva Davis - at the time a free-lance journalist and KDIA radio personality - this pageant was open to unmarried African American women aged 17-25, from the Oregon border to Fresno. Also includes views of contest judges and the press. Note that Cynthia Badie was the winning contestant in 1961 and you can read more about the background to this event on pp.75-79 of Davis's autobiography Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman's Life in Journalism.
