About This Item
KPIX-TV news footage from September 7 1970 with reporters Pat O'Brien and Rollin Post, featuring scenes from San Quentin state prison, Newport Beach CA (Orange County) and San Francisco where different state officials are asked to comment on the potential release of inmate Sirhan Sirhan as part of hostage negotiations over a hijacking by "Palestinian Guerillas." Members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) have just landed 3 hijacked passenger planes at Dawson's Field airstrip near Zarqa in Jordan. Includes press conferences by Governor Ronald Reagan at Newport Beach and Chief Deputy Attorney General Charles O'Brien in San Francisco, who are both asked to speculate on whether Sirhan could be released and if so, how would that be done legally. Ends with an interview by Pat O'Brien with San Quentin official Joseph O'Brien, who discusses potential scenarios about what might happen if San Quentin inmate Sirhan was to be released. Officer O'Brien also confirms his understanding that Sirhan has heard about the hijackers demands, via radio. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
