Interviews with women boxers: Diane Syverson and Theresa Kibby

About This Item

KPIX-TV news fotoage from May 4 1976 with reporter John Lester in San Jose, featuring scenes from a weigh-in at a gym for women boxers Diane Syverson and Theresa "Princess Red Star" Kibby, who are set to fight in the first professional all-women's boxing bout in Northern California, at the San Jose Auditorium. Includes views from the weigh-in and interviews with Syverson and Kibby. When asked how she feels about "violence",  Syverson replies: "Well I'm worried about myself ... maybe if I ever hurt someone in the ring, maybe I'd have a lot of bad feelings ... those are things I'm just going to have to find out. " Kibby explains: "I've always wanted to box but ... it wasn't legalized yet, you know. So we just, me and my other sisters we just kept on training." This fight was a draw and both women received a $300 purse. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
