Elayne Jones reflects on racial discrimination

KPIX-TV news footage from December 3 1974 featuring brief scenes from an interview with musical percussionist and timpanist for the San Francisco Symphony orchestra Elayne Jones, who comments on racial discrimination in the hiring of black musicians. She states: "I know of youngsters who refuse to even try to audition because they're not ... the education of our society is such that as a black person you have to be so much better than anybody else to get a job. And they feel that unless they're better, they won't even bother to audition. And unless they're superior - if they do audition - then they may get a job but not one which is convensurate with the kind of talent that they might have." Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
