Sheriff Don Striepeke on Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders (KPIX)

About This Item

KPIX-TV news footage from April 25 1975 with reporter Bill Hillman featuring scenes from a press conference by Sheriff Don Striepeke (1929-1988) in Santa Rosa, about the Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders. At least 6 or 7 young women were murdered while hitchiking around Santa Rosa between 1972-73 and Striepeke thinks there are possible connections to 13 other unsolved Califonia murders (and others in western states). Hillman explains that Striepeke hired a psychologist to produce a composite of the suspect. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks. There was speculation that these murders might have been the work of the Zodiac killer but many disagreed with this theory and it was never proved (or disproved). Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
