The Love Book case

About This Item

KPIX-TV news footage from June 23, 1967 with reporter Ben Williams featuring interviews with the attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Marshall Krause and co-defendant Jay Thelin, who comment on the court case over whether Lenore Kandel's The Love Book should be considered "obscene" under California state law. As Williams puts it, paraphrasing the judge: "The judge has concurred with the jury that The Love Book exceeds customary limits of candor for San Francisco." Krause states they intend to appeal and predicts this case will be in the courts for "a while." When Williams asks Thelin: "Would you sell The Love Book again, in your shop?" Thelin replies: "You mean if I had to start all over again? Well, probably yeah, sure ... I think Lenore is a poetess and the effort she made there was a honest, creative artistic effort. And no free society can suppress an artist's works." Also includes views of the other co-defendant in this case Allen Cohen stood outside the court in a corridor, trying - and failing - to avoid the cameras. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
