National Indian Women's Action Corp (1970)

KPIX-TV news footage from October 31, 1970 with reporter Ben Williams featuring scenes from the first general assembly of the National Indian Women's Action Corp, at the San Francisco American Indian Center. Williams refers to their: "Purpose of rallying ... tribal females around the culture and the problems of Indians. From the retaking of ancient indian lands to fishing rights." Includes interviews with the conference moderator Grace Thorpe, who states they are focusing on education, healthcare, welfare and chapter organization. Also with delegate Janet McCloud, who talks about: "Strengthening the family unit, which will affect, you know, everything ... Every Indian mother raises their sons. And we need to get in and fight the schools to stop them from busting the spirits of our sons. We need to get in and stop our Indian children from being taken away from our families and, you know, put into white foster homes." Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.

This 16mm reversal film print was transferred in 4K (4096 x 2970) using a Lasergraphics ScanStation film scanner, in October 2022.
