Miss Oakland Pageant bathing suit competition, 1955
About This Item
KPIX-TV news footage from June 4, 1955 featuring brief, silent scenes from the Miss Oakland Pageant's bathing suit competition at Lake Temescal's boardwalk, sponsored by the Oakland Junior Chamber of Commerce. This was a preliminary to the Miss California contest. Includes views of the contestants: Miss Uptown Motors (Sharon Bounds); Miss Lee Bros. (Jeanine Burris); Miss Elmhurst (Fran Smith); Miss Temescal (Carol Ome); Miss Fruitvale (Bobbye Walker) and others. Some of the judges are seen on the lake in rowing boats (including Wanda Ramey) and this reel ends with shots of people swimming. Note that KPIX didn't hire Wanda Ramey as a news journalist until 1957; she was appearing here as one of the panel judges. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
Many thanks to Oakland Public Library's Oakland History Center, for providing information and historical context for this silent film, sourced from the Oakland Tribune newspaper.
