Dianne Feinstein announces for mayor (1971)

KPIX-TV news footage from Friday September 17, 1971 featuring scenes from a press conference at the Pacific Heights home of President of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors Dianne Feinstein, who is announcing her candidacy for Mayor of San Francisco before the 5:00pm deadline. Feinstein held this press conference at 10:00am, the same time as Supervisor Harold Dobbs announced his mayoral candidacy and according to the San Francisco Chronicle nearly all the press attended Feinstein's home. Feinstein talks about "the agony" that went in her decision to run and what she considers to be the most critical problems facing San Francisco - and her ability to resolve them, stating: "My greatest obligation is to this city ... I can exert a diffferent kind of leadership." She goes on to address the relative lateness of her candidacy and being called a "political animal" by the press. There were 11 candidates who ran in the November 2, 1971 mayoral election and Feinstein eventually placed 3rd, behind incumbent Mayor Joseph Alioto and Supervisor Dobbs.
