Stanford study of Tanzanian chimpanzees to end

About This Item

KPIX-TV news footage from September 21, 1978 with reporter Jim Avila featuring a visit to Stanford University's Primate Research Center, where a study of Tanzanian chimpanzees is about to end. Includes views of these Tanzanian chimpanzees in their enclosure and an interview with Dr. Christopher Coe, who describes the challenges faced when studying these old world primates. Coe also explains what they've managed to learn about complex social behaviors: "I think there's been an increased awareness of the need for contact comfort, for mothers to reassure their infants through touching and tactile comfort." Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.

Note that a Pacifica Radio Archives science report from 1977 featuring a visit to the Stanford Primate Research Center can be listened to at the Internet Archive.
